What is a digital certificate?

A digital certificate is a digital file, with which a trustable third partie, guarantees the authenticity of a person or entity.

This file can be used as a tool for identification in websites, as a method more secure than traditional user/pwd. They can also be used for the digital signature of documents, legally valuable for most countries.
